Then I didn’t think much about the Eagles for a long time; until
I studied abroad in Peru, where I learned that Germans like "Hotel California" even more than they like David Hasselhoff. In Lima I lived with two Germans,
three French kids, and two Koreans who all thought the Eagles were America’s best
export. And that our Peruvian friends who came over were inclined to agree.
Before I arrived in Thailand, I had no idea how much of my
life would be karaoke. Thais love karaoke and I'm encouraged to participate in the etiquette-free display of self-indulgence as often as possible. Being well acquainted with karaoke rules of conduct stateside - where singing Free Bird or some song nobody knows is practically a criminal offense- I wanted to cater my song selection to my Thai audience. I had a hunch "Hotel California" just might be a hit. Incidentally, it was such a hit, I got a standing ovation and chance to sing, "My Heart Will Go On."

I’m actually listening to "Hotel California" right now, still trying
to understand its foreign appeal. My best guess is that the melody line is easy
to sing and California is the coolest place non-Americans can think of. In
Thailand when I say I’m from the US people say, "oh do you live in California" and I
say no I live in the north, “functionally, I live in Canada” And then no one
cares. I guess that’s why there’s no internationally iconic karaoke ballad called, “Hotel
Toronto.”
Can I shared my Opinion about this topic. For me when i thinking about why 'Hotel California' was hit in Thailand. One reason was Thai People they love party after people finished their job in farm they always set some small meeting where friend and relevant come and join together.talking about work ,politic , some story around the village with liquor and food. After that they started to sing traditional song such as ,LuK Tung or played some musical instrument like guitar. The Western song like The EAGLES are always play not because the lyrics that tell about good thing or bad thing but because the rhythm of this song can cath the soul of listener like they feel numb when listen to this song. Thai culture that permeate into song are very variety.I suggest that when your Thai language skill was enough. You should listen some song from "Ka-Ra-Baw" and "Ka-Ra_Wan" Band because many kind of culture or Folklore that permeate in many song of this two band.Hope you enjoy to learn Thai culture through songs.Good luck
ReplyDeleteI'm from California; therefore A) I'm doomed to sing "Hotel California" for the next 23 years of my life in Thailand, and B) I'm the coolest Farang my site's ever encountered.
ReplyDeletePlease tell me you meant 23 months! Also, you're the coolest farang until they meet my blonde ass.
ReplyDeleteOh geez, 23 years, what was I thinking? Maybe I meant that the Thai heat will make 23 months feel like 23 years...
